Labor splashes ABC cash

Labor has pledged $9 million over three years to bankroll a free online ABC learning program for Australian students.

Labor has promised to cough up $9 million for an ABC online learning resource if the party wins office next month.

Opposition communications spokesman Jason Clare said the free website ABC Splash was a valuable resource for Australian students, providing thousands of videos, audio clips, games and interactive tools which needed guaranteed funding to continue.

"This is too important a resource for our teachers and our kids to lose," he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

Neither Mr Clare nor Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek ruled out more ABC cuts under a Labor government, but insisted their party would better fund the public broadcaster.

Mr Clare said the ABC could always find savings and be more efficient.

"Where we can make the ABC more efficient, we should use that money to invest in more and more services for the Australian people," he said.

Nor did Mr Clare promise to restore all of the $250 million he said the Liberals had slashed from the ABC.

"The commitment we are making is that the ABC will be better funded under Labor than it will be under the Liberal Party," Mr Clare said.

"The commitments that we've made to date mean it's somewhere in the order of an extra $90 million for the ABC."
