Labor wants abuse redress made public

Labor MPs say recommendations with the federal government on how to help abuse survivors need to be published immediately.

Labor has called on the Abbott government to publicly release the redress recommendations of the child sex abuse royal commission, which were handed to the Governor-General on Monday.

Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus QC, opposition families spokesperson Jenny Macklin and spokesperson for women Claire Moore said it was clear that redress was an important part of healing for the thousands of people affected by the evil crimes.

"Hundreds of care leavers have shown immense courage in putting their life stories on the public record. Their stories outline a litany of emotional, physical and sexual abuse," they said in a statement.

They want the recommendations on redress and civil litigation made public so that governments and institutions can respond as quickly as possible

The recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse were handed in at midday on Monday and it will be up to Attorney-General George Brandis to decide when they will be made pubic on the commission's website.

Survivors of child sex abuse have already called for immediate publication of the findings.

Any scheme recommended by the commission will require government and the churches and charities which ran the institutions where children were abused to contribute millions of dollars.

Survivors and the commission have indicated the best way forward is for a national independent scheme run by the federal government.

The Attorney-General's office has been contacted for comment.
