Labor wants more detail on Syria mission

The opposition wants to see more details of a US request for Australia to expand its military role in the conflict against Islamic State.

Federal Labor continues to hold back support for any expansion of Australian military involvement in the conflict against Islamic State until it receives more precise details of a US request.

The opposition also wants Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to explain why she has singled out Iran for consultation about any expanded role.

"We are absolutely willing to listen to the government make its case for expanding Australian operations, but they should say exactly what it is they're proposing to do," foreign affairs spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek told ABC radio on Friday.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott insists Labor will be fully briefed on the US request and consulted in line with standard practice.

"It is obviously a significant move for our country if we were to decide to extend our air strikes into Syria," he told reporters in Cape York on Friday.

"In the end it's up to them whether they support any extension should the government make that decision."
