Labor with first promise in Sturt

Labor has made the first election promise in Sturt following Prime Minister Scott Morrison's move to call the federal poll.

Labor has fired the first shot in the battle for Christopher Pyne's former seat of Sturt, committing $13,000 for a toy library in Adelaide's northeast.

Opposition early childhood spokeswoman Amanda Rishworth and Sturt candidate Cressida O'Hanlon are visiting the Campbelltown toy library on Thursday.

They say it encourages play-based learning and social development in babies and young children and helps facilitate friendships and peer support for their parents and carers.

Sturt has come into play for Labor at the May election following Mr Pyne's recent decision to retire from politics, ending his 25-year parliamentary career.

He held the seat in 2016 with a margin of 5.4 per cent but it remains unclear just how strong his personal following was.

The Liberals are running former party staffer James Stevens who is still favoured to retain the seat.
