Lack of poise cruels Crows: Jacobs

Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs says a lack of poise and inconsistency have taken the Crows' AFL finals hopes out of their own hands.

Adelaide's lack of poise has taken their AFL finals fate out of their own hands, frustrated ruckman Sam Jacobs says.

The Crows must beat St Kilda on Sunday and hope three other results fall their way to sneak into the finals.

Jacobs says Adelaide have lost six games this season by less than two goals - the latest, a seven-point defeat to North Melbourne on Saturday.

"In all of those, we have probably been in front at some stage so it comes back to our poise and composure - we haven't been able to execute when it really matters," he told reporters on Monday.

"The competition is that even now ... if you can't do it, then you'll find you're in a position that we're in at the moment.

"We know we can do it. It's just a matter of doing it consistently."

Adelaide's finals hopes could be ended by the time of the Adelaide Oval encounter against the Saints - if Collingwood beat Hawthorn or Richmond defeat Sydney, the Crows are out.

And if West Coast down Gold Coast on Sunday in a match starting an hour or so before Adelaide's game, the Crows will need to wallop St Kilda to overcome the Eagles on percentage and take eighth spot.

"We have got enough respect for St Kilda that we'll worry about winning the game first," Jacobs said.

"We'll prepare like we have all year. Whether (coach Brenton Sanderson) Sando decides to let us know what the situation is or not, that will be up to him during the game.

"But as players you just worry about getting yourself right and getting yourself up for another game."

Jacobs said the Crows were frustrated at their inconsistency - they have won consecutive games only twice this season.

"We are just so up and down and you feel for the supporters just as much as you do for the boys because it such highs and lows from week to week," he said.

"It's not the way you want to play footy."
