Senator Jacqui Lambie believes the federal government will get the crossbench support it needs to strike a deal on the renewable energy target.

The independent senator agrees with the government's proposal of a pared back 2020 target of 32,000 gigawatt hours - down from the legislated 41,000 GWh.

In a statement, Senator Lambie said Labor - which wants 33,500 GWh - runs the risk of being "irrelevant" in the debate.
