Lambie expects deaf ear on budget

Independent senator Jacqui Lambie believes it will take a change of government leadership before she is listened to on the budget.

A key independent senator is concerned the Abbott government won't be listening to the crossbenchers when it puts together the May budget.

Jacqui Lambie says the government should look at cutting foreign aid and introducing a financial transactions tax as part of this year's budget.

She also describes the $5 billion asset recycling scheme - that encourages the states to sell their assets and invest those proceeds into new infrastructure - as "bribe money" which could be put to better use.

Senator Lambie said she is prepared to negotiate on budget items "when they are prepared to listen".

But she didn't think the current leadership would listen to the crossbenchers.

"The only way you can do this is you probably need a new prime minister and a new treasurer because they've done their dash," she told Macquarie radio on Wednesday.
