A landmark treaty has come into force laying down rules for the $100 billion dollar global trade in conventional weapons, including tanks, artillery, assault rifles, and ammunition.

Australia has welcomed the Arms Trade Treaty, saying it will help promote security, stability and economic development, by preventing the diversion of weapons to terrorists and other criminal groups.

Oxfam Australia was one of the non-government groups that pushed for the treaty during more than 10 years of negotiations.

Oxfam spokesman Ben Murphy told Olga Klepova it has the potential to save and change countless lives.
