Former Liberal National Party leader John-Paul Langbroek has announced he will run against current deputy Deb Frecklington for the party's top job.
In a tweet following the announced departure of leader Tim Nicholls on Friday, Mr Langbroek said he had the "measured resolve" to take on the new Labor government.
"I'm nominating to lead @LNPQLD because our party needs someone who knows the rigours of leadership, and with the experience to rebuild the trust with all Queenslanders" the tweet said.
The dentist turned politician will face off against Ms Frecklington at a partyroom meeting on Tuesday to decide who will replace Mr Nicholls.
But Ms Frecklington claimed a strategic advantage on Friday by enlisting another potential leadership contender, Tim Mander, to run as her deputy.
Mr Langbroek, a former dentist, was leader of the LNP from 2009 to 2011.
He stepped down when then-Brisbane lord mayor Campbell Newman announced he would run for the Labor-held seat of Ashgrove.
Mr Newman took the LNP to stunning victory in 2012 but then lost the government and his seat in 2015.
Mr Langbroek also held the job of deputy between February 2015 and May 2016 before he was replaced by Ms Frecklington.
