Langer back in groove at Senior Open

Australian golfer Peter Fowler is two shots from the lead after the second round of the Senior Open.

Bernhard Langer remains on course to make up for last year's Senior Open misery, the German golfer earning a share of the lead after Friday's second round at Royal Birkdale.

Langer led by one shot into the final round of the tournament at Turnberry 12 months ago, but mistakes on the back nine meant he had to settle for a share of sixth place behind winner Fred Couples.

The two-time Masters Champion is determined to make amends this year and he recovered well from a double bogey six on the sixth hole to end the day level on five under par with Mark Wiebe of the United States.

"I played like the weather today, pretty good," Langer said. "I just had one little blemish with a double bogey where I missed the green and double hit my chip shot. Otherwise it was a really good round.

"I hit a lot of good shots and putted much better today. So I'm very pleased with the position I'm in at the halfway point."

South Africa's David Frost is one stroke behind the leaders, while American Gene Sauers, the overnight leader, and Peter Fowler of Australia are a further shot back.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie posted a one over par 71 to finish in a share of 23rd place on three over par.
