Fabrice Lapierre never looked like replicating his 2015 silver-medal performance as South African Luvo Manyonga claimed gold in a high-quality men's long jump final at the world athletics championships on Saturday.

Lapierre claimed silver two years ago in Beijing with a best leap of 8.24m.

He didn't even get past the 8m mark in London, with his best effort of 7.93m good enough for 11th place.

Manyonga pocketed the gold with 8.48m, ahead of American Jarrion Lawson (8.44m) and another South African, Ruswahl Samaai (8.32m).

Eloise Wellings and Madeline Hills - along with everyone else in the women's 10,000m final - were put to the sword by remarkable Ethiopian Almaz Ayana, who added the world title to the Olympic crown she won last year in Rio.

Ayana clocked a winning time of 30 minutes 16.32 seconds, with the margin of 46.37 seconds to countrywoman and silver medallist Tirunesh Dibaba easily the biggest in world championships history.

Wellings was 22nd and Hills 26th.

"If you look at her stride and look at her cadence, she's unbelievably efficient," said Wellings of Ayana.

"She was obviously born and raised at altitude and that's something that all of us have got to step up to - getting to altitude a bit more."

The 34-year-old Wellings will now shift her focus to the 5000m heats on Thursday.

"I'd love to make the final," she said,

"You've got to be prepared to hurt like you've never hurt before."

Zoe Buckman was eliminated in the semi-finals of the women's 1500m.

Buckman finished eighth in the first semi in 4:05.93, with winner Faith Kipyegon from Kenya heading the five automatic qualifiers in 4:03.54.

Buckman's career highlight came at the 2013 world titles in Moscow, when she was seventh in the 1500m final.
