Peter Underwood was a beautiful man who relished his time as Tasmania's governor, his state funeral has been told.

About 1000 people attended the service at the Federation Concert Hall in Hobart on Monday afternoon.

Mr Underwood, the state's 27th governor and former chief justice, died on July 7, a month after undergoing surgery to remove a kidney tumour.

The 76-year-old had been expected to make a full recovery from the surgery before becoming ill again a day after returning to work in late June.

Among the dignitaries that attended was Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, former governor-general Michael Jeffery and all current state governors.

Mr Underwood's wife Frances gave one of the eulogies and described her husband as beautiful, loving and compassionate.

She said he felt honoured to be Tasmania's governor.

"He was a beautiful man in every sense of the word," she said.

"Peter was deeply honoured to be our governor and relished every minute of it, as did I by his side."

Chief Justice Alan Blow said that in the law, Mr Underwood exemplified honesty, integrity, efficiency, courtesy and fairness.
