Late winner hands Aust women hockey title

Australia have won the Hawke's Bay Cup women's hockey tournament in New Zealand, beating the hosts 3-2 with a last-minute goal in the final.

Australia scored a last-minute goal to beat New Zealand 3-2 in a thrilling final to decide the Hawke's Bay Cup women's hockey tournament in Hastings.

Jodie Kenny blasted the winner from a penalty corner to secure victory in the eight-nation tournament after the Black Sticks had led 1-0 at halftime.

Gemma Flynn scored for the hosts in the opening minute but the game exploded into life in the third quarter, when three goals were scored in three minutes.

Emily Smith levelled the scores from a penalty corner and Brooke Peris put Australia ahead when she found herself unmarked in front of goal.

New Zealand's Olivia Merry scored from a goalmouth scramble but her side failed to capitalise on other late chances before Kenny's winner.

New Zealand coach Mark Hager couldn't hide his disappointment after his fourth-ranked team were run down by world No.2 Australia.

"We got a goal up early and I think we were on top for the majority of the match. We created plenty of scoring opportunities but we must learn to be tougher defensively," he said.

"To let Australia score on the stroke of fulltime is absolutely heartbreaking for the girls. They have worked so hard over the last few weeks and this is not the way we wanted to end the tournament."

The Test was the 200th for New Zealand captain Anita Punt.

Seventh-ranked China finished third at the tournament with victory over Korea in the third-place match, while world No.3 Argentina completed the tournament in disappointing fashion, losing to the United States to end in sixth.
