Canberra's WNBL finals hopes have been dealt a big blow with injury-plagued Opals superstar centre Lauren Jackson ruled out for the remainder of the season with further knee problems.
Jackson played only six games in December and January for the Caps following an 11-month break with hip and knee issues which kept her out of last year's world championships.
Australia's most-decorated basketballer of either gender, 33-year-old Jackson - a four-time Olympic medallist, world championship gold medallist and three-time WNBA MVP - has become increasingly injury-prone over the past four years.
Scans have shown she will require more surgery on her injured knee, possibly as early as next week.
"I'm very disappointed to have to miss the rest of the season," Jackson said in a statement on the Capitals' website.
"I really enjoyed getting back on court doing what I love to do.
"It's been a long road to recovery and this is another small setback.
"I just have to take things one day at a time," Jackson said.
She averaged 13.8 points and 7.8 rebounds across her six WNBL appearances this season.
Canberra were 5-1 with Jackson in their line-up, supporting Capitals captain and MVP favourite Abby Bishop.
Without her, they are 5-9.
They are clinging to the fourth and last finals spot with two rounds to go, but have a difficult draw, away to leaders Townsville and home to second-placed Bendigo.
"Obviously, she's disappointed and we're all disappointed, but Lauren needs to do what's best for her health," Capitals coach Carrie Graf said in the statement.
"She has been playing in pain since she re-joined her UC Capitals teammates in round 10.
"She was committed to playing out the current season but, unfortunately, her recovery hasn't gone to plan."
