Law enforcement integrity watchdog slammed

The first audit into the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity has found the organisation needs to dramatically improve.

Australia's law enforcement integrity watchdog has been told to dramatically improve after audit an found it wasn't keeping track of how efficient it is.

The Australian National Audit Office examined the performance of the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity, which was put in place to detect corrupt conduct.

The report released on Tuesday found there was no way to conclude if the ACLEI was doing a good job because the commission had not "measured, benchmarked or reported" on its own performance.

"ACLELI has not established appropriate performance measures to inform itself, the parliament and stakeholders (including law enforcement agencies) of how efficient its activities are in detecting, investigating and preventing corrupt conduct," the report read.

The commission was established in 2006 and its jurisdiction and resources have expanded considerably since.

Head of the commission Michael Griffin said in response to the report, "I accept that our processes can be strengthened, and that what we could capture more data in seeking to do this.

"However, I am not aware of any national or international policing and corruption agency which have generally accepted measures of 'efficiency' for their major operational activities."
