Lawyer files lawsuit over Wolf Of Wall St

A lawyer who claims the film The Wolf Of Wall Street defames him has begun legal action in New York and is seeking $US25 million in damages.

A lawyer who says he was defamed by his portrayal in The Wolf Of Wall Street is asking for $US25 million ($A27.85 million) in damages and the film's removal from cinemas.

In a complaint filed on Tuesday in US District Court in the Eastern District of New York against the filmmakers and Paramount Pictures, Andrew Greene says that the toupee-wearing character Nicky "Rugrat" Koskoff (played by actor P.J. Byrne in the film) was modelled on him.

The Oscar-nominated film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, is based on the 2007 memoir by notorious Stratton Oakmont brokerage firm founder Jordan Belfort. Greene was the firm's head of corporate finance in the 1990s.

The lawsuit says the filmmakers made Greene look like a depraved criminal and drug user.

Paramount had no comment on the lawsuit.
