The World Surf League event at Bells Beach has been delayed with a lay day called for Friday.

"The wind has really come up strong since yesterday and conditions have deteriorated," said WSL Women's Commissioner, Jessi Miley-Dyer.

"The forecast has improved and we think it's going to get better so we are off for the day."

Event organisers will reconvene on Saturday morning at 8am (AEDT) to assess conditions and make the next call.

When competition resumes Australia's three-time world champion Mick Fanning will take on Australian trials winner Joe Van Dijk in a round-two elimination heat.

In the women's event, Brazil's Silvana Lima will face his sister, Nikki Van Dijk, in the women's competition.
