Lay day called at J-Bay Open surfing

The opening day of the World Surf League J-Bay Open has been postponed due to poor conditions on Wednesday.

A lay day has been called at surfing's J-Bay Open, the sixth stop on the 2015 World Surf League Championship Tour.

Small and declining surf was on offer at Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday, causing the opening day to be postponed.

"There are some small waves today, leftovers from that East windswell that we had, but it's faded away and the wind hit pretty hard this morning," WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow said.

"We won't be running any heats today and we'll be off for the day. We'll come back tomorrow morning but we have a tricky few days ahead as the winds aren't look favourable."

When competition commences, Australia's Taj Burrow will surf in the first heat against Michel Bourez and Brett Simpson.

Event organisers will reconvene on Thursday to assess conditions and make the next call.
