The Rio Pro has been called off for the day due to the small and inconsistent surf on offer at Brazil's Praia de Itauna.
Organisers will reconvene on Friday morning local time to assess whether competition can continue. World Surf League deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer is confident action will resume then.
"We've got pretty bad waves today and there is actually a pretty bad wind already," she said.
"We are going to call the competition off for the day. We are looking at much better surf for tomorrow. It is definitely meant to be picking up and the wind is also looking to be much better than it is today. We will come back tomorrow and hopefully we will be on."
Australia's Julian Wilson was the star of Wednesday's opening day, scoring a 9.77 in the final heat of the day for a combined score of 16.34 over compatriot Stuart Kennedy.
All eyes will be on the remaining women's second-round match-ups with Australia's world champion Tyler Wright due to face Brazil's Taina Hinckel. Laura Enever, and Keely Andrew are also in action, while there will be a guaranteed spot in the third round for Australia when Nikki Van Dijk and Bronte Macaulay go head to head.
Three-time world champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii faces South Africa's Bianca Buitendag.
On the men's front Ethan Ewing, Bede Durbridge, Adrian Buchan and Jack Freestone are all yet to feature in the second round, while there will be another all-Australian match-up in the ninth heat when Connor O'Leary and Stuart Kennedy hit the water.
