Small surf conditions have prompted organisers to call a lay day at the World Surf League Cascais Women's Pro event in Portugal.

One-to-two foot waves greeted organisers on the opening day of the eighth stop on the 2015 tour, with frustrating conditions expected to continue.

"Small surf today and we've called competition off until tomorrow," said WSL deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer.

"We're looking at a somewhat challenging forecast for the primary venue of Carcavelos, but we're fortunate in having a solid backup option in Guincho.

"We'll be back tomorrow morning to reassess conditions and make another call then."

Laura Enever will be the first Australian to paddle out when competition commences.

Enever will surf in the second of the first-round heats.

World No.3 Sally Fitzgibbons can close the gap between her and world title leaders Carissa Moore and Courtney Conlogue with a good performance in Portugal.

Fitzgibbons will surf in the fifth heat of the opening round against Coco Ho and Sage Erickson.
