Lay day called in California surf

Surfers have been forced to wait until Wednesday (Thursday AEST) to return to the water for competition after low swells forced a lay day at Lower Trestles.

Tyler Wright's bid to build her lead at the top of the World Surf League leaderboard has been put on hold after a lay day was called at Lower Trestles on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

Heavy winds and swells of just a metre greeted competition organisers, as they opted to call both the men's and women's events off for the day.

"We are still looking at that hurricane swell and we will cross our fingers that it comes in either tomorrow or Thursday," WSL Deputy Commissioner, Jessi Miley-Dyer, said.

Wright is one of three Australians left in the women's draw for the semi-finals.

Nikki Van Dijk and Stephanie Gilmore will face off in an all-Australian semi-final, with six-time world champion Gilmore gunning for her first event victory since 2014.

Wright will take on American Sage Erickson, comforted by the fact surfers ranked second to sixth on the championship leaderboard have all been eliminated.

It means Wright will take a minimum 5,000-point lead into the final three events of the season.

Meanwhile Joel Parkinson is the only Australian left in the men's draw.

He takes on giant-killer Tanner Gudauskas of the USA in his semi-final, while Brazil's Filipe Teledo and South African Jordy Smith face off on the other side of the draw.

Event organisers have until Sunday (Monday AEST) to complete the last day of competition.
