Mick Fanning's highly anticipated third-round heat against fellow Australian Adam Melling at the Fiji Pro could be days away after a second consecutive lay day was called.
After small swells saw the World Surf League event postponed on Tuesday, even weaker waves met organisers on Wednesday morning at Cloudbreak, forcing them to look further ahead to the weekend.
"There is not much happening out there," commissioner Kieren Perrow said.
"The swell has dropped off a little bit from yesterday morning. You can still see small, clean lines in the water, but the waves are only waist-high."
Conditions are expected to weaken even further on Thursday and Friday before building again on Saturday.
Organisers have until next Friday to complete the competition, however with swells expected to drop again in the middle of next week, it is likely they will try and squeeze as much surfing in between the weekend and Wednesday.
Retiring Australian Taj Burrow will also face Hawaiian John John Florence, while compatriot Matt Banting is first up against against 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina.
Australian Josh Kerr will face France's Jeremy Flores and fellow Aussies Adrian Buchan and world ratings leader Matt Wilkinson will take on Brazilians Miguel Pupo and Alejo Muniz, respectively.
