Organisers have called a lay day at the World Surf League season-opening event on the Gold Coast.

With only small surf on offer at Snapper Rocks, the decision was made to postpone the competition with several big names facing second-round elimination heats in both the men's and women's draw.

Former world champions Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater face second-round knock-out heats after failing to win the first round on Saturday while six-times women's world champion Stephanie Gilmore also has to surf for survival in the second round.

When competition resumes Fanning will take on American wildcard Dane Reynolds while 11-time world champion Slater is pitted against Australian qualifier Jack Freestone.

Gilmore has been drawn against compatriot Bronte Macaulay in the second round after being upset by Brazil's Silvana Lima on Saturday.

"We had an amazing day of surfing yesterday, but today we've woken up with a smaller swell that's declined a little over night," World Surf League commission Kieren Perrow said.

"Things are definitely slowing down after today but we're monitoring something coming in towards the end of the week, which should be pretty good."

A call on whether the competition will resume will be made at approximately 7.30am AEST on Monday.
