Lay day for world surf opener

Another lay day has been called at the World Surf League season opener at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast.

The World Surf League season opener on the Gold Coast has again been delayed with a lay day called for Wednesday.

Organisers made the call to resume competition on Tuesday in small swell with the women's second round being completed.

But World Surf League commissioner Kieren Perrow said conditions had deteriorated overnight at Snapper Rocks and it wouldn't be possible to compete on Wednesday.

"It was a fantastic day yesterday and it was great to see the women out there, they were ripping," Perrow said.

"The swell has dropped a lot since then and lost its consistency and size.

"We'll go on hold and be back tomorrow morning to have another look at conditions."

When competition does resume former world champions Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater will face sudden death second round heats in the men's draw.

Fanning is up against American wildcard Dane Reynolds while 11-time world champion Slater is pitted against trials winner Jack Freestone.

Women's world champion Stephanie Gilmore avoided elimination in Tuesday's second round and will face Sunshine Coast product Dimity Stoyle and round one conqueror Silvana Lima for a spot in the women's quarter-finals.

The next call by organisers is set for 7.30am AEST on Thursday.
