Tony Abbott is used to having the finger of blame pointed at him by cranky senators, but he may need to find a new tactic to fend off Glenn Lazarus.

The former rugby league great who is now an independent senator for Queensland is campaigning to limit coal seam gas extraction.

While he took the orthodox approach of presenting a petition to the prime minister, Senator Lazarus told an anti-CSG rally in Sydney he could harness some of his experience from league in his lobbying.

"I'm prepared to go and squirrel grip the prime minister," Senator Lazarus said.

"If that doesn't work, I've got other things up my sleeve, like the grapple tackle, the chicken wing and even the crusher tackle."

He then went further, alluding to a 2001 incident in which Wests Tigers player John Hopoate inserted his finger into opponents' anuses.

"If that (the squirrel grip) doesn't work, I'm prepared to use the Hopoate tactics," Senator Lazarus said.
