LDP warns govt to back off small parties

Senator-elect David Leyonhjelm has warned the government to back off attacking small parties if it wants their support in the Senate to pass legislation.

The federal government must back off attacking small political parties if it wants their support in the Senate to get its legislation through, Senator-elect David Leyonhjelm says.

Speaking at the Liberal Democratic Party conference in Sydney on Sunday, Mr Leyonhjelm said that from July the government would need six out of eight votes to get its bills through if they were opposed by Labor and the Greens.

"That's not a very high margin for error.

"I find it interesting that the government is talking up the certainty of getting its legislation through when it's not done very much to improve its chances."

Mr Leyonhjelm said the Liberal Party was talking about taking action to undermine the Liberal Democratic Party's use of the word `Liberal' in its name.

And it was also talking about making it more difficult for small parties to get elected to the Senate or be registered for the Senate.

"That's not a formula for winning the hearts and minds of small parties of which they need most of us to get its legislation through.

"If the government is determined to wipe out our name or make it hard for small parties then we will vote against them."

Mr Leyonhjelm said he would vote for the repeal of the carbon tax and that anything that increased taxes or reduced liberty would be frowned on by his party.

"There are bills before the Senate now which are intended to increase spending for example, well we could vote against all of them if we don't have an understanding."
