An incident in Lebanon involving France's far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has been characterised as a political strategy designed to attract more voters ahead of the April election.

The leader of the National Front party was in Beirut meeting with political leaders, but refused to meet with Lebanon's Grand Mufti after she was asked to wear a headscarf.

Maryse Helbert is a researcher with the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Melbourne.

She told Hashela Kumarawansa it looked like a political tactic.
