Leadership spill not on my agenda: Abbott

Tony Abbott says next week will be about getting on with government, as he all but ruled out spilling the leadership.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has effectively ruled out testing his support in the Liberal party room next week.

A number of backbenchers are agitating for a spill motion when Liberal MPs and senators meet in Canberra next Tuesday.

Some MPs have privately suggested Mr Abbott should spill the leadership himself and test whether he still retains majority support.

Asked whether this was an option, Mr Abbott told reporters in Melbourne on Friday: "I'm expecting us to get on with government."

"That's what I'm expecting to do every day ... including next Monday, next Tuesday, next Wednesday, next Thursday, next Friday."
