Leaking tanker still blocks Sydney road

A leaking fuel tanker is still blocking a major Sydney road in both directions after a collision with a P-plater's car.

Cranes have been brought in to try and move a leaking fuel tanker blocking a major western Sydney road.

The Cootes Transport tanker collided with a car on the Great Western Highway at Werrington on Thursday morning, trapping the P-plater inside her crushed sedan for more than half an hour.

The woman, believed to be in her 20s, was taken to Sydney hospital with a suspected broken leg.

The impact threw the 40,000-litre LPG tanker onto its side, causing a fuel leak that forced the evacuation of two nearby buildings at the University of Western Sydney.

Emergency services are undertaking the tricky operation of trying to right the tanker without causing a spark.

"The tanker is still leaking gas, that's why we have to proceed very slowly," NSW Fire & Rescue Superintendent Ian Krimmer told AAP.

"We don't want to do anything that could cause a spark or the ignition to light up that gas," he said.

The driver of the tanker is also in hospital but his injuries are not believed to be serious.

A Cootes Transport tanker was involved in a fatal fiery crash on Sydney's northern beaches in 2013 that killed two people.

A NSW magistrate last year found "systemic failure in operations and conduct" in the trucking company after it pleaded guilty to 255 charges.

A Cootes spokeswoman said following that accident, their tanker fleet now undergoes a complete independent inspection on a quarterly basis.

She added that within the past week the tanker involved in Thursday's collision had also undergone a routine maintenance check.
