American Katie Ledecky has set a new women's 1500m freestyle world record at the world swimming championships in Russia on Monday.

In the 1500m heats in Kazan, Ledecky clocked 15 minutes 27.71 seconds to eclipse her own mark of 15:28.36 set at last year's Pan Pacific championships on the Gold Coast.
