Silver Fern Camilla Lees will miss the Constellation Cup series against Australia because of a stress fracture in her foot.
Canterbury Tactix player Anna Thompson has been called into the team of 12 from the wider Silver Ferns squad to replace Lees in the midcourt for the five-Test series.
Meanwhile, scans have revealed that wider squad member Kayla Cullen has a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in her knee and will be out of action for at least seven months.
She suffered the injury while playing for the New Zealand under-21 side in Scotland.
Silver Ferns doctor Mark Fulcher says the injury will require surgery.
"We've had a look at the scans of Kayla's knee and with this type of injury, the rehabilitation time is typically around seven months post-surgery," Fulcher said.
The Constellation Cup begins with Tests in Invercargill (September 15) and Auckland (September 19) before fixtures in Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra in October.
