The Australian copyright industry is stepping up its fight against illegal downloads with a new website linking internet users to legal downloading platforms.
It comes after a government white paper last week outlined several potential measures to clamp down on online copyright infringement.
The site - digitalcontentguide.com.au - directs visitors to information about 80 licensed platforms providing games, TV shows, movies, music and sport streaming.
It includes links to iTunes, Google Play, Foxtel, and a range of music streaming services such as Spotify. A section dedicated to ebooks is not yet available.
Dan Rosen, head of the Australian Recording Industry Association, which co-launched the site in partnership with Foxtel, the Australian Screen Association and other groups, said consumers were confused about what is or isn't licensed.
"The digital content guide can help consumers find the content they want from the many licensed sources available in Australia today," he said in a statement.
Last week, the government proposed compelling internet service providers to block sites that host free content.
It also proposed measures to make it easier for copyright owners to take ISPs to court when they don't take steps to curb infringements, such as sending warning notices to customers.
The proposals have prompted debate on where fault and responsibility for clamping down on copyright infringement lie.
Consumer group Choice says illegal downloads are spurred by restricted choice and the comparatively high prices copyright owners charge Australians for digital entertainment.
