Lego Movie builds success in UK

Aussie-made film The Lego Movie has proved a box office hit in the UK as well the US and Canada.

The Lego Movie is building on its success in the US by soaring to the top of the UK box office chart in its opening weekend.

The animated comedy is the latest hit from Australian digital visual effects house Animal Logic and features the voices of Will Arnett and Elizabeth Banks.

It took a massive $US13.4 million ($A14.88 million) in ticket sales, dwarfing its nearest rival The Monuments Men, which managed just $US2.7 million ($A3.00 million) in its first three days.

The Lego Movie, based on the popular Danish-made plastic toys, earned a bumper $US69.1 million ($A77.3 million) haul in US and Canadian theatres when it opened earlier this month.

Animal Logic's past credits include Happy Feet, The Great Gatsby, The Matrix trilogy, Moulin Rouge!, 300 and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.

A team of 250 worked on the film at the Animal Logic facility at Sydney's Fox Studios, with the Lego characters a mix of computer generation and old-fashioned stop motion animation.
