Lehmann celebrates Ashes loss at football

Australian coach Darren Lehmann attended a football match just hours after a devastating Ashes loss, resulting in considerable backlash from fans.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann has brushed off a devastating Ashes series loss with an outing to Britannia Stadium to watch Stoke City against Liverpool in the English Premier League.

Lehmann's earlier plea for tickets to the match on social media was answered by Stoke City supporters and he was seen at the ground holding a banner.

He later tweeted: "Go well. Go the Potters."

But like his Australian team was humbled by England, Stoke went down 1-0 to Liverpool.

Fans, however, weren't impressed with Lehmann's plea for tickets to the match, saying he should be more focused on post-Ashes reflection rather than treating his time in England as a holiday.

"Maybe take the team with u [sic] to learn their defensive game," tweeted @Benny_Hearn.

Lehmann hit back at his critics accusing them of "abuse", and was backed by Candice Warner, wife of batsman David Warner, who asked how people could be "so unkind".

The backlash comes soon after captain Michael Clarke announced his retirement with Lehmann conceding he is as much to blame for the Ashes series loss as the team he coached and selected.
