Less economy, more park for Tas under ALP

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has visited Tasmania to support Liberal leader Will Hodgman ahead of the state election on March 15

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is warning Tasmania will be less of an economy and more of a national park if anyone but the coalition wins the state election.

Mr Abbott, in Tasmania on Saturday to support Liberal leader Will Hodgman, tipped a close race in the March 15 poll and one difficult for the coalition because of the state's Hare-Clark voting system.

He said he loved Tasmania's beautiful environment.

"But Tasmania has got to be an economy as well as a national park. If the Labor-Green government has its way, it will be more of a national park, less of an economy," he told reporters.

Mr Abbott said for Tasmania to be open for business, voters needed to elect Mr Hodgman.

"Unfortunately the Labor-Green government that we have in Canberra until recently and we still have here in Tasmania is congenitally hostile to business. It just can't help itself," he said.

The National Broadband Network has emerged as a significant issue, with Mr Hodgman reportedly declaring it could cost him the election.

Under the former federal Labor government, all premises would receive the highest speed fibre optic connection. That's now likely to involve hybrid fibre and copper wire connections.

Labor premier Lara Giddings speedily branded this a broken promise.

Mr Abbott said the coalition would keep its commitments.

"I want to lead a government which is competent and trustworthy," he said.

"I give this guarantee - under the coalition, we will get the NBN going again and we will roll out the NBN past more houses than Labor managed in the last five years."
