Paul Gallen wants the NRL to revert to using its bunker to make calls on general play - or remove technology in refereeing altogether.
The league reduced the bunker's jurisdiction this season after criticism around speed and accuracy of decisions during its 2016 debut.
It was stripped of the ability to rule on knock-ons in general play or 40-20 calls, instead being limited to determining point-scoring plays, in-goal restarts and reportable foul play.
But the multi-million dollar system is again in the spotlight after several contentious refereeing decisions in week one of the finals.
Cronulla captain Gallen, scorned by being on the wrong side of crucial calls in Sunday's elimination final 15-14 loss to North Queensland, has suggested the NRL take an all-or-nothing approach to technology.
"We have this technology there and available to us. I think we use it all the time or we just don't use it," Gallen told Sky Sports Radio on Tuesday.
"If the referees are going to make errors, as players make errors, let them make errors and let the game flow.
"Let's not have all this technology there at our feet and use it in some situations and not in others."
Sharks coach Shane Flanagan listed a series of refereeing decisions he viewed as wrong in his post-match media conference.
While statistics show Cronulla's ill-discipline hurt them against the Cowboys, Gallen maintains the Sharks were hard done by.
He said the unfavourable 17-10 error count included four incorrect knock-on calls against his team, while playmaker James Maloney's sin-binning for a professional foul was too harsh.
Gallen also spared Fifita criticism for losing possession in the final minute to deny the Sharks a chance of a match-levelling field goal.
"Fifiita would probably want that one back ... Unfortunately Andrew can do that sometimes but he can come up with the big plays as well," Gallen said.
