Lewis close to NRL return for Cronulla

Cronulla's representative backrower Luke Lewis is considered a chance to return from a knee injury for the struggling NRL side this weekend.

Ailing Cronulla could receive a major boost today with representative backrower Luke Lewis a chance to be named for the side's crunch clash with Melbourne.

Lewis trained strongly with the side on Monday and is considered a good chance to make his NRL comeback from a knee injury this weekend.

The 31-year-old NSW and Australian forward underwent minor knee surgery in February and was expected to be out for just two-to-three weeks.

While he was originally eyeing playing in the side's final trial, complications from the procedure have kept him on the sidelines for the first two rounds.

Coach Shane Flanagan went close to naming Lewis last week however he pulled up short following a training run.

The Sharks staff are confident of Lewis returning against the Storm at AAMI Park on Saturday but were monitoring his injury after hitting the paddock with teammates on Monday.

"He looks good, it looks like he's close to being back," backrow teammate Wade Graham said.

"After this week he can't be too far off for us. Hopefully he's back sooner rather than later because he's a world-class player and you need those sorts of players."

The Sharks have been disappointing in losses to Canberra and Brisbane in the opening rounds, and Lewis' experience would be a boost as they aim to turn their season around.

"Lewy is a great player, he's been a great player forever and any team is going to be better with him in it," Graham said.
