Lib Canning candidate has his own ice plan

Liberal candidate for Canning Andrew Hastie says his plan to tackle the ice scourge will work where others have not because he is in charge.

Various plans to tackle Australia's methylamphetamine epidemic may barely have made a dent in it, but the Liberal candidate for Canning reckons his strategy will work.

Out on the campaign trail again in Armadale on Friday, former SAS captain Andrew Hastie promised to develop and implement a Canning Ice Action Plan within his first 30 days in office if elected.

Mr Hastie said he was passionate about finding a solution to the problem, which must be looked at from every angle - prevention, cure and punishment.
"Over the past few weeks, I've spoken to a lot of people in the Canning community about the destructive impacts of ice," Mr Hastie told reporters.

"Too many families are being torn apart and drug-related crime is rising on our local streets.

"I want to make our area a better place and ice is holding us back."

Asked whether his plan would work when others had not simply because he was in charge, Mr Hastie said: "That's right.

"I think I bring something to the party.

"I've worked overseas, I've worked on a number of different complex issues, and I'm confident that I can bring my experience to bear on this problem for the people of Canning.

"Nothing is easy, but I'm confident that we can get results.

"The community really cares about this.

"So we're going to go out there and get the job done. Just wait for the results."

On the other side of politics, where the passion to battle the ice problem is equally high, Labor candidate Matt Keogh and Senator Penny Wong campaigned in Pinjarra.
