An openly gay Liberal Party candidate in the September election says he would introduce a private member's bill to support same sex marriage.

Kevin Ekendahl is contesting the seat of Melbourne Ports which is held by Labor's Michael Danby and says there's growing support for a conscience vote even among those members of the coalition who oppose same sex marriage.

Labor has already pledged to bring forward legislation and allow a conscience vote but Opposition leader Tony Abbott says the coalition's position would be decided in the party room.

Mr Ekendahl says Tony Abbott would be bound to allow a conscience vote if there's enough support within the party.

He's told Greg Dyett he's campaigning strongly for that to happen.
