A coalition MP has broken ranks and called on his government to accept a higher renewable energy target to end a political impasse and prevent further job losses.

The government and opposition have been a loggerheads for months over the previously bipartisan target, which requires 20 per cent of Australia's energy to come from renewables by 2020.

Liberal MP Dan Tehan said the government should scale up its final position to seal a deal and inject certainty back into the renewables sector.
