A woman has died after being hit by lightning in Melbourne.

Lauren Brownlee was struck outside a home at Chirnside Park in the northeast suburbs on Friday night and later died in hospital.

Her partner Ben Hollow was also injured in the lightning strike, the Herald Sun reported.

Ms Brownlee worked at Stockdale and Leggo real estate agency at Croydon and the newspaper said her coworkers were devastated.

"'Loz' was loved by everyone for her gentle kind and giving nature. Our hearts go out to her family and her partner Ben," it said in a statement to the newspaper.

One of the woman's friends paid tribute to her on Facebook, writing: "Rest easy and fly high Lauren Brownlee! ... My heart and condolences go out to your family! You were such and amazing women."
