Lindt cafe inquest continues in secret

A coroner will probe why ASIO officers ruled Man Haron Monis was not a terror risk when multiple complaints were received days before the Sydney siege.

Lindt Cafe gunman Man Haron Monis was assessed at least three times by ASIO and found not to be a threat of terrorism, an inquest into the tragedy has been told.

ASIO received 18 calls and emails about a Facebook page set up by the gunman days before he took customers and staff hostage in the December 2014 siege.

"All the world now knows that Monis was a dangerous deviant," said Coroner Michael Barnes in Sydney on Wednesday.

He said the question the inquest must grapple with was: should ASIO have predicted his violent outburst?

Private hearings will continue after the inquest into the siege resumed on Wednesday.

These hearings will take high-level security evidence from ASIO personnel about interactions between Monis and the security agency.

Mr Barnes said it would look at "whether the agency had or should have had information indicating that Mr Monis posed a threat of politically motivated violence".
