Lions chairman Sharpless resigns

After months of conflict of interest claims over the Lions' proposed training base relocation, Brisbane AFL chairman Bob Sharpless has resigned.

Brisbane chairman Bob Sharpless has resigned after months of conflict of interest claims over the AFL club's planned new training base.

Deputy chairman Andrew Wellington is tipped to take over from Sharpless who had held the role for four years.

Sharpless walked away after conflict of interest concerns arose over the Lions' plans to relocate their training base to Springfield.

Sharpless is deputy chairman of Springfield Land Corporation - major partners in the AFL club's relocation plans.

A Lions statement said Sharpless initially told the board in May of his intention to resign.

The statement also acknowledged Sharpless' work with Springfield Land Corporation on their training base relocation plans.

"The Lions are anxious to secure funding from the state government ahead of the impending November 25 election for their proposed training and administration development, The Reserve, at Springfield," it said.

"Sharpless is deputy chairman of the Springfield Land Corporation and played a huge role in initial talks with local Ipswich Council and the state and federal governments."

During his stint at the Lions' helm, Sharpless oversaw the appointment of CEO Greg Swann, football manager David Noble and coach Chris Fagan.

"When I first became chairman, the club had a number of issues, where we had a lot of unhappiness within the football club," Sharpless said in the statement.

"For me, the last four years have been about trying to resolve those issues, appointing the right people for positions and campaigning for a new training and administration base, which the club most desperately needs."
