Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has demanded improvements from his side after a disappointing second quarter display laid the foundations for Saturday's 27-point loss to Essendon.

The Bombers raced out to a 42-point second quarter lead at The Gabba but despite the Lions showing great character to fight back after halftime, it was of little consolation to Fagan.

"I was proud of the way we fought back in the third quarter," he said.

"But if we want to become a good team we can't put ourselves in that position.

"Our players are disappointed, we had a high expectation to win.

"Not to be disrespectful to Essendon but we only have ourselves to blame."

In the first half the Lions were second-best only registering four tackles in the first quarter, three of these to Tom Rockliff, and continued to miss opportunities in the early stages of the match.

Fagan said he told team at the break a lift in intensity was needed, and his players delivered.

The Lions pegged a fightback in the third quarter with new 19 year old academy product Eric Hipwood kicking a goal to give them a lead.
