Lions coach tells Rockliff to cool it

Set to serve his second suspension of the AFL season, Brisbane midfielder Tom Rockliff has been told to learn his lesson by coach Justin Leppitsch.

Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch admits he's frustrated by midfielder Tom Rockliff's behaviour after the Lion copped the second suspension of the AFL season.

Rockliff will miss Saturday's home clash against West Coast following a one-game ban for striking Richmond's Alex Rance last weekend.

The 24-year-old had already been suspended for engaging in rough conduct against Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell in round one.

Leppitsch says he's spoken to Rockliff about his behaviour and it's up to him to avoid further attention from the Match Review Panel.

"He has to learn from it, he has no choice," Leppitsch said.

"You've got to be able to control yourself and make sure the things you do are clearly within the rules because anything outside that, you run the risk.

"I've had a chat to him ... he's smart enough to figure it out.

"At the end of the day, it's his actions, he needs to be smarter than that."

Rockliff's ban means the Lions host the Eagles without any of their starting midfielders with Matthew Leuenberger (Achilles), Jack Redden (ankle) and Daniel Rich (knee) sidelined.

Leppitsch says the turnover in the Lions' midfield is a key reason behind the team's inconsistent displays this year.

"It's just another gun midfielder out for us ... so it adds a bit of stress to that part of the ground," he said.

"Our defence is probably in order, but our midfield can't get any continuity this year."
