Lions lose West to injury for AFL season

Brisbane's ruck department is looking threadbare with the AFL club confirming Trent West's season is over due to a knee injury.

Brisbane ruckman Trent West's AFL season is over with scans confirming the Lion has a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

West will undergo reconstructive surgery after suffering the injury during Saturday's win over Carlton at the Gabba.

After being recruited from Geelong in the off-season, West had made 10 appearances for the Lions this season and was taking over the primary ruck duties with Matthew Leuenberger sidelined since April due to a knee meniscus injury.

Lions general manager Dean Warren said confirmation of the extent of the injury to West was a blow.

"With both Trent and Matthew out of the side, we will look to the likes of Stefan Martin and rookie Archie Smith as candidates to fill that ruckman role," Warren said.

Martin, 27, is yet to play a game this season while teenager Smith hasn't debuted at AFL level, leaving Lions coach Justin Leppitsch with limited options ahead of this weekend's trip to Melbourne to play the Western Bulldogs.
