Lismore local crashes Barnaby doorstop

Lismore local Barry Davidson listened for a bit as journalists asked questions of the deputy prime minister. Then he chimed in.

Barnaby Joyce was only expecting questions from reporters at his press conference in Lismore.

The deputy prime minister probably didn't expect to be confronted by an 85-year-old local who wanted details - quite specific ones - about his announcement.

Mr Joyce was in the northern NSW city on Wednesday in the marginal seat of Page to pledge a $1.4 million upgrade of the Oakes sports oval.

As journalists ticked off their questions, Barry Davidson crashed the media event with his.

"Is there going to be more sports? Which way are you gonna play? Will Aussie Rules be played?"

Local MP Kevin Hogan took most of his questions, before Mr Davidson launched into a long-winded explanation of runs and chases.

It was only when Mr Joyce deftly manoeuvred a final question did Mr Davidson's interrogation end.

Mr Hogan, who is facing a tough fight for the seat from Labor's Janelle Saffin, said it would boost tourism to the town with money well spent.

And he hopes the funding will create a future generation of cricket greats like Adam Gilchrist, a former Lismore local.

"There are a lot of wannabe Adam Gilchrist's around here. I'm sure there are many who will try to emulate him."
