Live exporters OK to send China cattle

China has agreed to Australian animal health protocols needed to start exports of live cattle.

Australia will start flying live cattle to China after Beijing agreed to animal welfare standards.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce says exports will start off in a small way with a few thousand to be sent to China by air.

But he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday the market could build up in a decade's time to about one million head a year.
