Live sport betting ads may be banned

Federal cabinet is expected to consider tougher new laws on gambling advertising during live sporting matches.

Cabinet is expected to consider new laws banning ads from betting agencies during live sporting events.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield will take the proposal - that goes further than the current ban on live odds during matches - to cabinet next Tuesday, The Australian reported.

But The Australian said sporting bodies are likely to oppose the laws as they risk losing money from product fees - the commission paid on each bet waged on their sport through Australian betting agencies.
