The AFL draft is set to undergo a major overhaul, with the league to hold its national selection meeting over two days and introduce live trading of picks.
In another significant change to the off-season, the trade period will be shortened and the deadline moved to 8.30pm to make it more television-friendly.
This year's draft will be held on Thursday November 22nd and Friday the 23rd at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.
It will be the first national draft held in Victoria since 2009 after stints on the Gold Coast, in Sydney and in Adelaide.
The introduction of live pick trading is a significant innovation for the league that will allow clubs to swap picks to move up or down the draft order while the draft is underway.
Future picks from the following year may also be traded.
For example, a club might trade a pick or picks to move from the 15th overall selection to the fifth in order to snare a particular player that is still available.
However, once a player is drafted by a club he cannot be on-traded to another as is the case in some American sports like the NFL.
This year's trade period will start on Monday, October 8, and finish on the evening of Wednesday, October 17.
The free agency signing period runs from Friday, October 5, to Friday, October 12.
